Striking and very long-tailed bright rusty cuckoo, found in the lowlands and foothills of western Mexico. No similar species in range, and does not overlap with Common Squirrel-Cuckoo, with which it was formerly lumped. Occurs in a wide range of wooded and forest edge habitats. Mostly seen foraging stealthily at mid-upper levels in trees, where it can be surprisingly difficult to see. Often seen swooping across roads and eliciting a ‘wow’ reaction. Song a long series of woodpecker-like sharp ‘pik’ notes, but more frequently found by its two-note ‘pik-grrr’ call.
