The name "hwamei" comes from its Chinese name huà méi, which means "painted eyebrow", referring to the distinctive marking around the bird's eyes. The species is a popular cagebird because of its attractive song.

大陸畫眉（學名：Garrulax canorus），又称金畫眉、虎鸫、如意鸟、英雄鸟，闽南语中又名花眉，是噪鹛科噪鹛属的一种鸟类，由于婉转悦耳的鸣唱和雄性间好斗的特性，是传统的“四大笼养鸟”之一，早在北宋时期就有饲养。最初于1758年由卡尔·林奈描述并命名，台湾画眉曾被认为是其亚种，目前公认有2个亚种。主要分布于华南、华东、华中、云南、四川、陕西南部、海南以及东南亚的老挝、越南北部，但也引入了台湾、新加坡、日本和夏威夷。
大陸畫眉遍体棕褐色，其腹部中央呈污灰色；尾羽呈深棕色，且带有细微黑色横斑；头部有深色细小纵纹，具有明显的白色眼圈，并在眼后延长，因而得名“畫眉”。上喙偏灰，下喙黄色。雌鸟与雄鸟几乎没有差别。幼鸟上身纵纹较少，尾羽也无横斑。主要栖息在海拔1800米以下，灌丛、低林地、乡村和城市的公园。其行动隐秘，性格羞怯，一般隐藏在枯叶间穿行觅食，主要食虫，但在入秋后也会取食作物和野果。雄性繁殖期尤爱高歌，声音婉转、高亢且富有变化，也善效鸣；而雌性的鸣叫则比较单调。
大陸畫眉的繁殖期在四月至七月间，一般一年两窝，为一夫一妻制，雄性之间常为争夺雌性而发生打斗，甚至会致死。鸟窝呈杯状，一般位置较低，但随着季节推进，到夏季时巢位也会相对较高。雄鸟主要负责警戒和觅食，而雌鸟则负责筑巢、孵卵和育雏保暖等。
大陸畫眉的种群数量在中华人民共和国境内比较常见，尚处稳定，因而被IUCN评为无危物种；但在越南和老挝可能已经比较少见。这主要是因为笼鸟贸易，由于人工繁育技术尚不成熟，所以用作笼鸟的大陸畫眉主要是通过野捕获得。为了保护其免受野捕和贸易的影响，大陸畫眉已经被纳入《瀕危野生動植物種國際貿易公約》附录二；且2021年，中华人民共和国将大陸畫眉列为国家二级保护动物。
